Hillary Clinton (demokrat)
Clinton menar att staten inte ska lägga sig i individens och familjernas beslut när det gäller reproduktiva rättigheter. Hon vill arbeta förebyggande mot aborter. Clinton får omfattande ekonomiskt stöd från högt uppsatta personer inom Planned Parenthood, och PP har också gett henne sitt officiella stöd.
“I’m proud to stand with Planned Parenthood.”
Bernie Sanders (demokrat)
Sanders ställer sig bakom ”kvinnans rätt att välja”. Han har gjort sig känd som en förkämpe för tillgång till säkra aborter och för familjeplanering och preventivmedel. Ett av hans vallöften är att öka det ekonomiska stödet till Planned Parenthood.
”We are not returning to the days of back-room abortions, when countless women died or were maimed. The decision about abortion must remain a decision for the woman, her family and physician to make, not the government.”
Ben Carson (republikan)
Carson har uttalat att han vill se en reversering av beslutet Roe mot Wade (domen som lade grunden för USA:s nuvarande abortlag). Carson var tidigare demokrat, då personligen emot abort men inte för ett förbud. Med tiden har han svängt radikalt. Han har gjort denna uppseendeväckande jämförelse mellan abort och slaveri:
”During slavery, a lot of the slaveowners thought that they had the right to do whatever they wanted to that slave. Anything that they chose to do. And, you know, what if the abolitionists had said ‘I don’t believe in slavery, I think it’s wrong, but you guys do whatever you want to do’.”
Ted Cruz (republikan)
Cruz är starkt prolife och vill strypa allt ekonomiskt stöd till Planned Parenthood. I en debatt om obegränsad tillgång till abort använde Cruz uttrycket ”war on women” – vänsterns slagord mot republikanerna – om aborter:
”This legislation is a very real manifestation of a war on women, given the health consequences that unlimited abortion access has had on many woman.”
”This legislation being considered is extreme legislation. It is legislation designed to eliminate reasonable restrictions on abortion that states have put in place. It is designed to force a radical view from Democrats in the Senate: that abortions should be universally available, without limits, and paid for by the taxpayers.”
Marco Rubio (republikan)
Rubio har uttryckt att han hellre förlorar valet än står på fel sida i abortfrågan.
“I do believe deeply that all human life is worthy of the protection of laws. I’ve already said, for me, the issue of life is not a political issue and I want to be frank. I would rather lose an election than be wrong on the issue of life.”
Rubio har fått stöd av prolife-apologeten Scott Klusendorf:
”I am endorsing Marco Rubio for President. As a pro-life apologist, I am convinced he’s the best candidate to articulate the moral vision our nation needs at this crucial moment. Both his worldview and his pro-life record affirm that endorsement.”
Donald Trump (republikan)
Trump har tidigare ekonomiskt stöttat abortliberala kandidater, men hävdar själv att han, efter att i alla år ha varit ”pro-choice”, har svängt i frågan. Detta skulle ha ett samband med personliga upplevelser. Trump vill att Planned Parenthood ska få fortsatt ekonomiskt stöd, men inte till den del av verksamheten som utgörs av aborter. Hans uttalanden om aborter har varit svårtolkade och ibland sinsemellan motsägande, och han har fått rykte om sig att inte vara pålitlig i dessa frågor. Nyligen skrev han dock i en krönika i tidningen Washington Examiner:
“Let me be clear — I am pro-life. I support that position with exceptions allowed for rape, incest or the life of the mother being at risk,” he said. “I did not always hold this position, but I had a significant personal experience that brought the precious gift of life into perspective for me.”
John Kasich (republikan)
Kasich har ett bra ”prolife record”, dvs han har stått upp mot abort konsekvent under sin politiska karriär. Som guvernör i Ohio har han skrivit under en rad restriktiva lagar som har lett till att hälften av statens abortkliniker fått stänga. Detta är dock inget som Kasich själv lyfter fram i sin kampanj. Han har uttryckt att han är för abort vid incest, våldtäkt och fara för moderns liv. År 2011 skrev han under en lag som förbjöd sena aborter:
“Life is a gift from God and one way that we express our ongoing gratitude for it is by respecting it. This [20 week ban] bill does that in a very fundamental way and I’m proud to have signed it into law.”
